Which country is best for software engineers in 2022?


Which country will be the best to live and work in as a software engineer in 2022? That’s the question we set out to answer when looking at the top ten countries where software engineers are most in demand, according to Glassdoor, Upwork, Indeed, LinkedIn, and developer surveys from StackOverflow. We analyzed those rankings based on five main factors: 1) Overall desirability of the country, 2) opportunities (number of open tech jobs), 3) local talent pool (number of developers per capita), 4) cost of living, and 5) average software engineer salary.


What these rankings are based on

The following factors: salary, cost of living, working hours and family friendliness. The countries that made it to the top 10 list are China, Russia, India, Japan and the US. Taiwan makes it to number 5 because of its low cost of living and high salary.


Countries with the highest quality of life

Software engineers are in high demand, but where should you go to take advantage of the opportunity? Software engineer salaries are high and the quality of life is good. The countries with the highest quality of life offer a low cost of living, low crime rates, and plenty of options for recreation. 

Hong Kong - Hong Kong offers an excellent quality of life and has been ranked as one of the most livable places on earth. Salaries are high and there's a low cost of living. Crime rates are low while the climate is pleasant year-round. There's no shortage of parks or other green spaces to explore either.


Countries with high employment opportunities

Software engineers have a wide range of career opportunities, but which countries offer the most opportunities? You may be surprised to find out that not only do some countries offer higher salaries, but they also have more job openings! There are currently over 1.6 million jobs available in the US alone, with a salary averaging around $101,000 per year. Canada has more than 600,000 jobs available at an average salary of $77,000 per year. India offers just under 400,000 jobs with an average salary of $67,000 per year. Norway offers more than 76,000 jobs and an average wage of $70,600 per year.


Countries with high salaries

The world's highest-paying countries for software engineers are located mostly in the Middle East and Asia. Here are the top five: 

1. United Arab Emirates - $107,000 

2. Singapore - $102,000 

3. China - $99,000 

4. Taiwan - $97,000 

5. Switzerland - $95,000


Countries with positive perceptions towards women

Companies need to be aware that they have a responsibility to the communities that they work within. A country with positive perceptions of women, where women are respected and valued, would be ideal. 

*Japan: Japan has one of the lowest gender gaps out of countries surveyed by the World Economic Forum. Women make up 52% of the workforce, and 60% of Japanese households have a female head of household. 

*Canada: Canada has been ranked as one of the top ten countries for gender equality by the World Economic Forum. Women make up 46% of Canada's workforce, and 56% percent of Canadian households have a female head-of-household.


Countries with a low cost of living

Its a well known fact that the typical cost for many everyday items fluctuates significantly starting with one country then onto the next.
